Public speaking can feel daunting — but you don’t have to face it alone.

At Derby Speakers Club, we create a friendly and supportive environment where you can practise, improve, and enjoy speaking in front of others. Whether you’re a complete beginner or an experienced speaker, you’ll be made welcome.

What to Expect at a Meeting

Our meetings are relaxed, enjoyable, and varied. A typical evening includes:

• Chair’s welcome a rundown of the evening ahead

• The President’s address the club president addresses the group with the latest news
• Prepared speeches (6–8 minutes) on topics chosen by members.

• Constructive feedback from fellow members, helping you grow with encouragement.

• Impromptu speaking practice — great fun and a chance to think on your feet.

You can take part at your own pace, whether you want to listen at first, try a short exercise, or dive into a prepared speech. Progress comes naturally, step by step.

Awards and Progression

The Association of Speakers Clubs offers awards in both public speaking and leadership.

• Delivering and passing a certain number of speeches earns a certificate in public speaking.

• Playing roles within the club brings leadership certificates.
