Relaunch of Derby Speakers Club

We’ve decided to relaunch the Club on Tuesday, 1st October and will meet every first and third Tuesday of the month thereafter (excepting the 17th December as the venue is likely to be in demand at that time).

That’s to say:

October – 1st and 15th

November – 5th and 19th

December – 3rd

We’ll supply the subsequent dates very shortly.

We normally meet at 7.30 and the session lasts about two to two and a half hours.

The address is: 2 St Edmund’s Cl, Derby DE22 2DZ

What did she say?

Don’t know what this girl is saying – I think she should have gone to Derby Speakers Club because what we do at Derby Speakers Club is help each other with public speaking.  We do it properly, though you can start from nothing and gradually work your way up to confidence and enjoying this activity.  Giving mini-speeches is actually a great way to spend an evening.  It’s a path to personal development, but you also learn a lot from other people’s presentations – the topic areas are very varied and the speeches often memorable.

Who and What?

Who we are:

Keen and helpful amateurs.  Some have done this for many years, others are new and enthusiastic.

What we offer:

Three speeches of 6-8 minutes given by members of the club is the normal format.  They can speak on anything they want.

Each speaker is given feedback by an evaluator showing what their strengths are and how they can improve.

After a short break the second half of the meeting is taken up with Topics.  This is where the Topics Chair invites members and guests to speak for 2-3 minutes on something relating to a theme.  You can take a topic where you like.  You can defend an opinion or tell a personal story or both.

The evening finishes with the General Evaluator giving their assessment of the evening and its all gone.

Goals and Awards

The ASC offers awards in public speaking delineated in The Speakers Guide.  A certain number of speeches delivered and passed will bring you a certificate in public speaking, while roles played at the club bring certificates in leadership.  The mastering of basic speech construction and techniques of delivery lead on to more advanced projects and higher awards in public speaking.

Many people enjoy having a goal in their own personal development and find that awards motivate them in this.  Others have greatly benefitted in having plenty to put on their CVs and used the techniques learnt at the ASC in presentations at work.

Let’s do this

Whatever your motivation and your goals in life, why not join us in this public speaking adventure.

By supporting each other we all move forward; we are all learning new things however far we’ve got along the line.

Or maybe all you want is entertainment and a night out.  The story-telling, humour, sometimes emotion and other times wisdom you get at speakers clubs can’t be beaten.

This is interactive entertainment where you become the person you always should have been.
